Desktop virtualization: the single most important step for cost control and reliability

QUICK SUMMARY
  • Unregulated systems where users add software and adjust settings are expensive to support and inherently unreliable, especially as they grow.
  • Desktop virtualisation makes the support task easier and improves reliability.
  • Desktop virtualisation improves security and remote access, make installing new terminals much quicker.
  • Desktop virtualisation reduces desktop hardware costs.

Often computer system growth is not managed. Computers are added that save to the server but also save user data and contact details locally.

Users add additional programs and change settings as they see fit.

Every desktop is thus a unique support installation requiring unique knowledge and servicing, generating unique problems and spreading them system wide.

This creates very high service demand. The problem however will never be fixed by increasing support resources, because the system is inherently unreliable. New issues can be introduced from any desktop at any time.

The situation will get increasingly worse as the system grows.

The proven solution is desktop virtualisation, where all software and settings are customised to meet the needs of the company, or perhaps the department, but then standardised across all terminals.

Typically applications and settings are fixed at server level.

This means there is reduced demand on desktop terminals, which do little more than access the server. Full computers can be replaced by so-called thin clients which do not have the unwanted resources needed for stand-alone computers. Thin clients are cheaper, more reliable and longer lasting.

Desktop virtualisationmeans there are only one or a few unique desktops to be supported. The range of possible desktop problems is sharply reduced when everyone is running exactly the same system. Most local problems can be resolved by simply re-initialising the system from the server.

System administrators can do most of their work centrally, without physically visiting each desktop. So they can get much more done. Adding a new terminal is much quicker and easier.

The system is far more reliable, so staff get more done.

When there is a system or software update it is applied centrally, just once, then reflected in each desktop as it logs in. Remote access (eg, from home) is easier and delivers a more consistent experience.

Data and network security is enhanced.

Disaster recovery is much faster.

Desktop virtualization and thin client technologies are a Silverfern speciality. Call us to find out how you may be able to dramatically reduce your computer stress, increase reliability and user productivity.

Like most technologies, one size does not fit all. Systems have to be adjusted to individual needs and desktop virtualisation will not always be the best answer, but we will give you honest advice on your best options.
